an irrigation sytem that consists in distributing large water flows by gravity over the cultivation land.

Example

Most olive orchards use surface irrigation to meet the water demands of the crop (basin, furrow, and border strip methods), but sprinkler and low volume and drip systems are becoming more widely used.
